A Sense of Place
Al's first book was based entirely on his hometown, Nanaimo,
often called the "Hub City" because it lies in the geographic
center between Victoria to the south and Courtenay to the
north. It's hard to say what this book may have done for
tourism in Nanaimo. One thing is for certain: there have been
many more tourists visiting the Nanaimo area since this book
was published. Perhaps, in some small way, this book and
those about other BC towns that followed helped to make
Nanaimo the prosperous tourist center that it is today.
